Commission a Painting

Bring Your Story to Life in Paint

A commissioned painting is more than an image — it’s a legacy. Whether you want to capture the fleeting innocence of childhood, celebrate a special relationship, or honor a lifetime of work, a custom painting transforms memory into something tangible and enduring.

Every commission begins with a conversation. I’ll listen to your story, collect references, and collaborate with you every step of the way to create a work that feels deeply personal and beautifully crafted.

The Commission Process

Every commission is unique, but the process is always personal and collaborative.

1. Consultation

We’ll start with a free consultation — in person or by phone or email — to discuss your ideas, the subject, and your space. This helps us determine the right size, composition, and color harmony for your piece.

2. Concept & Planning

If possible, I love meeting the subject in person to paint a small color study and take reference photos. For remote clients, I can work from your own photos following simple lighting guidelines.

3. Painting & Progress

Once we finalize the plan, I’ll begin painting on an archival linen panel using the highest-quality oils. I’ll send progress updates if you wish, so you can watch your vision unfold.

4. Framing & Delivery

When the painting is complete, we’ll discuss framing and insured delivery. Local clients are always welcome to pick up in person and see the work in the studio.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m interested but don’t know where to start.

You’re not alone! If you love my style, we’ll start with a friendly chat. Think about:

  • Who/what the painting will depict
  • Where it will hang + size
  • Desired mood/setting
  • Timeline and budget
Can this be a surprise gift?

For portraits I suggest involving the recipient; for pets/florals/landscapes, surprises work great. I also offer gift certificates.

Can you work from photos?

Yes. While my best work comes from meeting the subject in person, I can create beautiful paintings from photos that meet a few simple standards:

  • Soft, natural lighting (no flash or harsh shadows)
  • Minimal distortion and clear resolution
  • Neutral clothing and calm expressions

Multiple photos are always appreciated so I can study the subject’s unique presence.

If you’re within 50 miles of Denver, I’m happy to travel to you for a sitting at no extra charge. For out-of-state clients, travel costs will be added to the commission.

Do you require a contract and deposit?

Yes. Once we’ve agreed on details, I’ll send a standard commission contract and require a 50% non-refundable deposit to begin. This ensures your spot in my painting schedule.

How long does it take?

Most commissions take 3–6 months, depending on size and complexity. Larger or more detailed paintings may take longer. I’ll provide an estimated timeline once we begin. Good things — and good paintings — are worth the wait.

Pricing

Every commission is tailored, but here’s a general guide for portraits:

SizePrice
8×10"$1,480
11×14"$2,850
16×20"$4,500
20×24"$6,700
24×36"$11,230
30×40"$15,600

Smaller works (up to 12×16”) are approximately $18.50 per square inch. For larger sizes, rates decrease slightly to keep prices balanced. Additional subjects add about 25% per figure.

Prices cover the artwork only; framing, travel, shipping, and sales tax are separate. Framing options are available upon request.
